In reciprocating compressors, oil wiper rings ensure that the lubricating oil remains contained in the crankcase. The scraper rings used for this are still predominantly made of metal. These generally have weak points, frequently resulting in massive loss of oil, damage to the piston rod, as well as a short service life and lack of reliability. These drawbacks become more significant, especially as compressor speeds continue to increase.

Technology leap in oil wipers

HOERBIGER has achieved the technology leap of the OFD wiper ring with an operating principle that previously went unused in this field - a special sealing ring shape and the use of polymer.

Conventional solutions scrape the lubricating oil off the piston rod with sharp-edged rings. The OFD wiper ring, in contrast, takes advantage of the elastohydrodynamic effect.

The pressure in the lubricating gap between the elastic sealing ring and the piston rod causes the ring to become deformed. This deformation of the sealing ring at the same time changes the shape of the gap and, as a result, the pressure distribution. The OFD wiper ring ensures that the oil is scraped off the piston rod efficiently and gently and then recirculated into the crankcase, without causing wear on the piston rod (see animation).
