Smart Actuators for Sheet Metal Working

[ Published in HOERBIGER@MOTION 02/2010 ]

ERMAKSAN in Bursa, Turkey, is a leading manufacturer of sheet metal working machines. Their portfolio encompasses CNC-controlled and conventional press brakes, hydraulic CNC guillotine shears, CNC nibbling machines and punch presses, as well as CNC laser cutting equipment. For more than ten years, HOERBIGER Automatisierungstechnik GmbH in Altenstadt, Germany, has supplied key hydraulics components, in particular cylinder blocks, pump blocks, and compact blocks for CNC press brakes with a press force of up to 4,000 tonnes, as well as hydraulic controls for shears.

In the new development of machines, components featuring the latest technology are a critical competitive advantage for ERMAKSAN. When the company started to produce CNC press brakes in 2000, it was searching for a reliable partner for the necessary hydraulic components. The company awarded the contract to HOERBIGER Drive Technology, which has since primarily supplied cylinder blocks, pump blocks, and compact blocks. The role of HOERBIGER in the partnership with ERMAKSAN now goes far beyond that of a mere supplier: together, the companies test innovative components and approach the practical and technological implementation for the machines.

One example is the HDDL drive for stamping presses developed by HOERBIGER. The hybrid drive - HDDL stands for "Hybrid Direct Drive Linear" - is an excellent example of how revolutionary developmental leaps can be achieved in sheet metal working with smart actuators.

The core component of the drive, which was patented for HOERBIGER in 2008, is the electrohydraulic linear amplifier, which is also protected by patent rights. Due to rising technical requirements, conventional, purely hydraulic stamping machines are beginning to reach their performance limits. Purely electromechanical punch drives, in contrast, meet the requirement for high precision, but do not achieve the high movement dynamics of hydraulic systems. HOERBIGER combined the dynamic control of servo-electric linear drive technology with the high power density and robustness of hydraulics, merging the best properties of both technologies in the HDDL punch drive concept.

During stamping operations, the hybrid drive produces up to 1,300 strokes per minute with a stroke length of three millimeters. The maximum achievable stamping force is 300 kN, the maximum stroke is 40 millimeters. The outstanding precision is apparent from the positioning accuracy of less than 0.01 millimeters. This makes the hybrid drive especially well-suited for marking. Another technical feature of the HDDL drive is the full, highly dynamic control of the tappet movement. It contributes to lower energy consumption and noise emissions.

For ERMAKSAN and its clients, these are performance-defining factors that play a role in making investment decisions.

Part

HOERBIGER deliveries include hydraulic cylinder blocks, pump blocks, and compact blocks for CNC press brakes with a press force of up to 4,000 tonnes, as well as hydraulic controls for shears. The most innovative key component that is supplied to ERMAKSAN is the HDDL (Hybrid Direct Drive Linear) punching head.

Part of

ERMAKSAN was founded in Bursa in 1965. The demand for sheet metal working machines grew when international groups, including Renault and Fiat, settled in Bursa with plants of their own as part of the city's industrialization and modernization. ERMAKSAN benefited from this economic environment and today is one of the fastest growing players in the worldwide market of sheet metal working machines. The portfolio encompasses CNC-controlled press brakes, conventional press brakes, hydraulic CNC guillotine shears, CNC nibbling machines and punch presses, as well as CNC laser cutting equipment.

Partnership

ERMAKSAN has worked with HOERBIGER for more than ten years. A large part of the smooth cooperation is due to BTC Otomasyon ve Hidrolik, Istanbul, the HOERBIGER distributor in charge of Turkey. For ERMAKSAN, HOERBIGER is not only a supplier, but also a competent and sought-after development partner.
